The part our regulator wants you to read.

Every law firm has one of these pages. Ours is short, because it only covers the parts that apply to a small firm in San Francisco. Using this site means you agree to it. Effective October 14, 2026.

1. Who we are

This site is published by Axolotl Law, P.C., a California professional law corporation, 28 Geary St., Suite 650 #5108, San Francisco, CA 94108 (Axolotl Law, we or us). Our attorneys are licensed to practice law in California. You can reach us at hello@axolotl.law.

2. Attorney advertising

This site is a communication by a law firm and may be considered attorney advertising under the rules of some jurisdictions. Matthew Muir, at the address above, is the attorney responsible for its content.

3. Not legal advice

Everything on this site is general information about how we work and how legal costs tend to behave for early-stage companies. It is not legal advice for your situation, it is not a substitute for advice from a lawyer who knows your facts, and it may not reflect the most recent changes in the law. Do not act on anything here without getting advice first.

4. No attorney-client relationship, and what that means for what you send us

Reading this site, emailing us, booking a coffee or talking with us does not make you a client of Axolotl Law. We become your lawyers only after we have run a conflicts check and both of us have signed an engagement letter. Until then:

  • Please do not send us confidential information. We are not offering to treat anything you send unsolicited as confidential, and it may not be protected by privilege.
  • Anything you send before we have agreed to represent you will not prevent us from representing another person or company, including one whose interests are adverse to yours.
  • We may decline any engagement, and we are not responsible for any deadline or obligation of yours until we have agreed in writing to take it on.

If you would like to become a client, email us and we will start with the conflicts check.

5. No guarantees

Nothing on this site is a guarantee, warranty or prediction about the outcome of any legal matter. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Descriptions of what we have done for other companies describe those companies and those facts, not yours.

6. Where we practice

Our attorneys are licensed in California, and we practice law from California. We advise on Delaware corporate matters, which does not require admission in Delaware, and we work with local counsel where another state's or country's license is needed. We do not intend this site to solicit clients in any jurisdiction where it would not comply with that jurisdiction's rules on lawyer advertising.

7. Fees shown on this site

Plan fees and hourly rates on this site are current as of October 2026 and are reviewed annually. They are published so you can plan, not as an offer that is accepted by clicking. The fee terms that apply to you are the ones in your signed engagement letter, which also explains how flat monthly fees are handled, including your right to have a fee held in a trust account until it is earned and to a refund of any unearned part. The charts on the How we work page are an illustrative model built from bills we have seen; they are not a quote and your numbers will differ. Plans include in-person time and events hosted by the firm (office days, dinners, retreats). These are part of the services, provided at our expense, have no cash value, are not transferable or redeemable against fees or hours, depend on plan tenure and availability as the engagement letter describes, and cover the venue, meals and program only. Transit, airfare and any other cost of getting there are yours. We do not pay client expenses.

8. Email and booking

Email is not a secure channel. If you email us, you accept that risk, and section 4 applies to anything you send before we represent you. Coffee bookings run through a Google Calendar appointment page, which is a Google service governed by Google's own terms and privacy policy; booking a coffee tells us your name, email address and company, and nothing more than you choose to add.

9. Links to other sites

Links on this site take you to sites we do not control. We provide them for convenience, we do not endorse what is on them, and we are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices.

10. Our content and marks

The text, design, charts and images on this site are owned by Axolotl Law and protected by copyright. You may view, download and print pages for your own personal, non-commercial use, provided you keep them unmodified and keep this notice. Any other use, including commercial reproduction or republication, needs our written permission first.

"Axolotl Law", the axolotl mark and the tagline "Part-time General Counsel for the Full-time Founder" are our marks. You may refer to us by name in a fair and accurate way; you may not use our logo or marks in a way that suggests we endorse, sponsor or are affiliated with you without our written permission.

11. Acceptable use

You agree not to use this site for any unlawful purpose; to harvest email addresses or other contact details from it; to attempt to access any part of it or its underlying systems without authorization; to interfere with its security or operation; or to use automated tools to scrape it in a way that burdens it. We may block access to anyone who does.

12. No warranties and limitation of liability

This site is provided as is and as available, without any warranty, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not promise that the site will be available or error-free, and we may change or remove any part of it at any time.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Axolotl Law and its attorneys and staff are not liable for any loss or damage of any kind arising out of your use of, or inability to use, this site or anything on it, including indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages, even if we have been told they are possible. Some jurisdictions do not allow some of these limitations, so some may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits the professional duties we owe to a client under a signed engagement letter, or any liability that cannot be limited by law.

13. Privacy policy

This policy explains what information this site collects and how we use it. It applies to this site only; what we collect from clients in the course of an engagement is governed by our engagement letter and our duty of confidentiality, which is a much stronger protection than any website policy.

What we collect
  • What you give us. If you email us or book a coffee, we receive what you send: typically your name, email address, company and your message.
  • What the site records on its own. Like most sites, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs: IP address, browser type, the pages you visit and when. We do not use analytics, advertising pixels or tracking tools of any kind.
How we use it

To reply to you, to run the conflicts check if you ask to become a client, to set up and keep the coffee appointment, to keep the site running and secure, and to understand how the site is used. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who else sees it

Service providers who run things for us, and only for that purpose: Google (email, calendar and booking) and our website host. We may also disclose information when the law requires it or to protect our rights. We do not share it with anyone else.

Cookies and "Do Not Track"

This site sets no cookies. The one thing it stores in your browser is your choice of light or dark mode, which never leaves your device. We do not respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals because we do not track visitors across other sites.

How long we keep it

Messages and booking details are kept for as long as we need them to respond to you and, if you become a client, as part of your file. If you do not become a client, we keep enough to run future conflicts checks, which the rules of professional conduct require, and delete the rest within a reasonable time. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for its standard period.

Your choices

You can ask us what information we hold about you from this site, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, subject to what we must keep for conflicts checks and legal obligations. Email hello@axolotl.law. We will not treat you differently for asking.

Children

This site is for founders and companies. It is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, for material changes, note it here.

14. Governing law and venue

These terms and your use of this site are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute about them will be brought in the state or federal courts located in San Francisco, California, and you consent to their jurisdiction.

15. General

We may update these terms from time to time; the version on this page, with its effective date, is the one that applies. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, that part is severed and the rest remains in effect. These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about your use of this site. They are not an engagement letter and do not change any engagement letter. Questions go to hello@axolotl.law.
